Balance is an important aspect of design. It ensures that one element doesn’t overpower another to help formulate harmony and flow.
What is Balance?
There are three types of balance to consider – symmetrical, asymmetrical and radial.
Symmetrical balance is where both sides of a space are identical. Symmetrical balance tends to have a more formal and ordered look. Symmetry is common in interior design and can give the feeling of stability and calmness.
Asymmetrical balance is where elements on either side of the space do not reflect each other but have similar perceived weights. Asymmetrical balance creates a more eclectic feel but can often be more difficult to achieve effectively.
Radial balance involves establishing a natural focal point in the space and having smaller elements diverging from it evenly. Radial balance is a good option for larger spaces or rooms that have curved walls and don’t lend themselves as well to symmetrical or asymmetrical balance.
Designers also use negative space to create balance where simplicity is needed to create evenness to the façade.
How to Create Balance in the Design of Your Home
There are many ways you can incorporate balance in your home. This can be created using materials, textures, shape and size. Focal points in the home including roof design, window placement and ceiling heights can also be used to create proportion. As an example, large windows can balance or ‘off set’ solid walls or if your home has a focal point such as a fireplace, placing furniture or items towards it can create radial balance.
Using balance as a design element in your home not only makes a space look more visually appealing, but it also makes it feel more inviting.
