The Acer palmatum is a small feature variety of Japanese Maple with an attractive V-shaped form. It’s a striking deciduous tree with light green foliage in Spring, a deeper shade of green in Summer, with Autumn turning the leaves golden yellow and orange. However, its notable characteristic is the bark turns an eye-catching reddish pink in the winter months after all the leaves have fallen, making this tree a beauty all year round.
Our Landscape Designer Liza describes the Coral Bark Maple as, ‘a commanding feature tree which is easily accentuated with some garden lighting from below to illuminate the bark and foliage year-round’.
Where should you plant Coral Bark Maple?
The Coral Bark Maple tree is suitable for small gardens and can also be grown in planter boxes. They should be positioned in part shade or where they can get afternoon shade. Leaves can become scorched in hot weather, and they prefer moist, well-drained soil.
Consider planting the Coral Bark Maple outside a feature window to enhance the outlook from your window for a real ‘WOW’ factor!
Caring for your Coral Bark Maple tree
The care of the Coral Bark Maple is the same as caring for any Japanese Maple tree. After planting, it needs to be watered deeply every day for the first week. During the second week, watering every second day will suffice. After the second week, watering deeply once or twice a week is ample. If you notice the tips of the leaves turning brown, then reduce the number of times you water the tree. The Coral Bark Maple requires little pruning but, if necessary, prune in winter when the tree is dormant.
