Optimising space in the home is a number one priority for many. Nooks are a great way to utilise unused space and add functionality to your entire home.

What is a Nook?

A nook is usually a small, tucked-away area that is designed to be functional but also inviting and in some cases cozy. Nooks provide a fantastic opportunity, as the list of possible uses just keeps growing the more you think about it.

Types of Nooks

Nooks can have a variety of functions. Here are some examples.

  • A reading nook can provide a dedicated haven to curl up with the latest bestseller.
  • Work or study nooks offer a quiet workspace to focus on work while minimising distractions. It also provides a space to store devices and other work-related resources.
  • A breakfast nook can provide a charming space to enjoy your morning coffee and breakfast.
  • Coffee station, for your morning (or afternoon) pick me up.
  • A play nook is not only a great space for the children to play but can also function as a great designated space for toy storage.
  • A relaxation nook is the perfect space to remove yourself from the chaos of life and carve out time for yourself.
  • A plant nook brings the outside in. Plants not only provide visual beauty to the home but are also beneficial to well-being.
  • A nook near the garage is a great space for a drop zone for bags, keys, shoes and jackets.
  • A pets nook dedicated to our furry friends. A climbing frame and scratching post for Whiskers, or bed and water bowl for Rex, storage to house treats and accessories. They are an important member of the family so a dedicated space of their own makes sense.

There are so many more nook ideas, the list goes on.

Where Can You Put a Nook?

Nooks can be placed in almost any area of the home. You can utilise space under a staircase, on a second-floor landing, in a window seat or in an unused corner or alcove. Just about any space in the home can be turned into a nook, and any custom design can allow for one.

What to Consider When Planning a Nook

While a nook may be a small space, there are many things to consider. Think about the purpose of your nook.

If you’re using the nook for work or study, then you will need a desk, a chair and possibly some shelving. Being a small space, your furniture will need to be slimline. The nook should also be located in a section of the home that is free from distractions.

If the purpose of your nook is to relax with a coffee, read or nap then you need to consider comfy furniture whether it’s utilising an existing window seat or investing in custom joinery.

If you’re using the nook for relaxation, consider using throw pillows and blankets or scented candles to help soften the space and set the mood.

Regardless of how you plan to use your nook, lighting is an important factor. Natural light is great but if the location of your nook is tucked away in a secluded corner, then you may need to consider some task lighting or a floor lamp.
